About YourHijabiTeacher

       Who is behind YourHijabiTeacher?

Sumaya Noor is an American-born Syrian Muslim who was blessed to have spent her entire childhood within Islamic schools and flourishing Muslim communities. After graduating from her Islamic high school with 3 peers, the school’s first graduating senior class, she went on to a private University to continue her studies. Her undergraduate studies were in Education, a passion she picked up from her mother and inspiring leaders in her community.

Sumaya currently holds a teaching license with three certifications in Early Childhood, Early Childhood Special Education, and Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical Disabilities for K-12. She also holds additional certification for working in private and public Early Intervention settings. Her teaching experience gives her general and special education public school experience between PreK and 3rd grade, as well as 7 years in an Islamic Homeschooling Program where she was a 2nd and 3rd grade educator. Sumaya continued to provide services to the Homeschooling Program as a teacher mentor and resource to new teachers.

Upon graduation, Sumaya began her journey with YourHijabiTeacher. Her vision was to build a hub of resources for Muslims growing up in America. Inspired by her childhood experiences and resources, as well as missing resources, she wanted a space and place to bring her creative ideas to front. Starting as an educational account on Instagram, Sumaya wanted to to be the image and voice for Muslim educators in the public sphere. Her posts, captions, and stories often brought to light the true struggles and blessings of being a Muslim in America, and the prejudices faced by minorities in America and in the workforce. She often posted suggestions and recommendations for teachers who may have Muslim coworkers or Muslim students in their class. She stood as an advocate for Muslims in the education system in America.

As her passion and vision grew, she began creating simple visual resources and references for children, hoping these could be beneficial for homeschoolers, classroom settings, or even a family upbringing on Islamic values. Her vision continued to expand as she brought in her professional lens to the work and began designing curriculum for Islamic schools.

Currently, Sumaya is working as a preschool teacher and dedicating time to YourHijabiTeacher, and hopes for this passion to be beneficial for Muslims all around the globe.
